The Drift Inn

The Drift Inn was known until recently as The Beaulieu Road Pub. That name came from the nearby station on the main line but with hardly any trains that stop, built in the days when landowners prevented railways coming too close to their land. Hence Beaulieu Road Station, on the way to Beaulieu from Lyndhurst - and in fact about halfway between the two places, in a delightful piece of forest.

From here, or rather just over the bridge at Shatterford Car Park, there is a lovely circular walk starting along a gravel track across heath and through cotton grass bog, becoming a path over grassland past bracken and occasional oaks, through the edge of a beechwood, along the Bishop's Dyke, over marshy ground and back near the railway line.

Just the place for Sunday morning cobweb clearing exercise topped off with baguette and beer at a picnic table behind the pub.
