Walking from the Green Dragon at Brook to the Rufus Stone: directions you can print
New Forest Walks
About two hours, partly along roads: 3.5 miles.

On the road in front of the pub, turn left so that the Bell Inn is on your right. Set off up the raod and at the junction take the sharp left hand turn signposted to the Rufus Stone. This minor road soon has dense woods on the right for a spell, but is mainly through the fields of Skers Farm. Just past the farm the road takes a sharp right-angled corner to the left and then descends towards a ford with a footbridge.

Climb up the other side of the ford and follow the road round to the right passing Canterton Manor Farm to the Sir Walter Tyrell Inn. On a hot day you may like to stop here for refreshment: you're about half way round.

Then, stroll up the hill through oak, beech and holly to the Rufus Stone memorial. Maybe this is to remember King William II or to celebrate Sir Walter Tyrell, who shot him?

From the car park opposite the memorial, turn left into the trees at right angles to the road. The path drops down amongst the trees to a small stream alongside the fields of Malwood Farm. There is a ford with sandbag stepping stones where you reach the stream. Trot across, and fork left towards more open country and Greys Farm.

Pass the farmhouse on your left and almost immediately swing round to the left along a signposted bridleway. Follow the bridleway through the woods till it meets a tarmac lane. Continue along the lane between high hedges to a road juction with a letterbox.

You'll recognise the lane ahead, which leads back to the ford with the footbridge, so you can now retrace your steps past Skers Farm to the pub for a drink and plenty to eat!
