Southampton Information Shopping in Southampton

Southampton is a major city with Roman history. The Pilgrim Fathers set off from here to establish the colony of America: their memorial stands opposite Royal Pier. Many of Southampton's buildings were destroyed by wartime bombs; immediate postwar reconstruction had to sacrifice fine architecture for rapid construction of utility buildings as money was tight. Now we have a somewhat patchy townscape but much bustle and considerable prosperity. Southampton is notable for its busy port used by ocean liners, cruise ships, ferries and container shipping; and for its university, teaching hospital, theatres, and of course the annual Boat Show. Alternatively, just try wandering up the High Street from Town Quay, where the Hythe Ferry berths. West Quay is accessible by frequent free bus from Town Quay, too.
