Southampton is a major city with Roman history. The Pilgrim Fathers set off from here to establish the colony of America: their memorial stands opposite Royal Pier. Many of Southampton's buildings were destroyed by wartime bombs; immediate postwar reconstruction had to sacrifice fine architecture for rapid construction of utility buildings as money was tight. Now we have a somewhat patchy townscape but much bustle and considerable prosperity. Southampton is notable for its busy port used by ocean liners, cruise ships, ferries and container shipping; and for its university, teaching hospital, theatres, and of course the annual Boat Show.
